A Medieval copper alloy swivel loop, probably dating to c. AD 1100-1500. The object consists of a circular loop, sub-circular in cross section, but becoming flat at one point around its circumference; this section of the loop features a sub-rectangular perforation.

Dimensions: diameter 14.3mm; thickness 4.0mm; weight 2.31g.

Similar swivel loops with zoomorphic decoration are known from Medieval contexts, such as that from Rattray Castle, suggested to be part of a dog’s lead (Murray & Murray 1993: 191, no. 204). Plainer examples are also known however, cf. NMS-2CDFD2, BH-8366C5, and a medieval date range is similarly suggested.
